Fund Raising - The Pirton to the London Cenotaph Walk

Like most villages in the country, Pirton is justifiably proud of those who left to fight in the two world wars and never returned, and our village memorial pays fine tribute to those individuals.  Sadly, time takes its toll on such memorials and their upkeep is rarely without a commitment of both hard work and money.

To raise money to have our memorial cleaned, the surrounding trees trimmed and the area fenced, a group from Pirton and the surrounding villages are going to walk from Pirton to the nation's war memorial, the Cenotaph, in London's Whitehall.

Twelve people, from Pirton, Clifton and Langford walked the 43 miles over June 6th and 7th 2009.  The walk was cross country to Hatfield on the first day, and then down to central London on the second day.

The aim was to raise money for the memorial and therefore all the walkers were sponsored and the walk was highly successful with enough money raised to undertake the work and go someway to securing its maintenance.  Of course money can always be used and is welcome so if you wish to donate any sum please contact Tony French, at 6 St Mary's Close, Pirton, SG5 3RG.  Any cheques should be payable to the PHSG or Pirton Heritage Support Group who help and facilitate the War Memorial Group.
