Jane's Comments:

I first stitched the house in silk on linen as part of a Sampler celebrating our Silver Wedding in 1984. Since then I have become fascinated by 15th and 16th Century tapestries, in particular the mille fleures design.

In December 1998 I saw for the first time the original of the fabulous 15th Century 'Lady and the Unicorn' tapestry at the Cluny Museum in Paris. This gave me the final push to stitch the house in a mille fleures setting.

I can't draw so there was no formal design other than deciding on the proportions of the house. I just stitched, filling in the gaps with something the right size. I incorporated local rarities like the pasque flower and bee orchid, taken from Keble Martin.

The Hertfordshire Stag (hart) was copied from a tea towel sold by the Hertfordshire Society. Then I added our own animals and some taken from the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, and stylised flowers, speedwell, daffodils, snowdrops and scarlet pimpernel, strawberries, harebell, buttercups and daisies.

I had the most huge fun!
